Mentally Disabled Man Ostensibly Sues Deaf Community for Defamation


“Deaf people are clearly out to make us look bad; always getting people to ask them if they’re ‘retarded or something’”

 WASHINGTON D.C. - The Deaf Community is in shock today as Carl Filbert, a 27-year-old mentally disabled man, filed a class action lawsuit against 'Deaf People' for alleged defamation. Because of his disability, the lawsuit was filed by his brother who has acting power of attorney. This means he has control over all of Carl's life. Money and all. Carl's brother, Marv, was unavailable for comment as he is still fighting a lengthy alimony lawsuit with his ex-Wife in Florida as well as Bankruptcy proceedings. 

 The 49-page document alleges that the Deaf Community has been 'purposely feigning ignorance and lesser functions specifically to disturb the day-to-day life of non-disabled people and to inflame sentiments towards the mentally disabled community' When approached by the Earmold, Carl simply reiterated that his name was Carl and agreed to a face to face interview.

 Earmold correspondent Jenny LaBoucher met with Carl at a Starbucks in Foggy Bottom where Carl, in few words, stated that he was in favor of the lawsuit though he didn't really seem to understand what it was. 

 "When he found out that I was deaf, he patiently worked through the signs. He's better than most people! I don't think he really wanted to sue us" said Jenny.

In light of this, we at the Earmold feel that both disabled people and Deaf people share a common vulnerability and implore our readership to stay alert. Also, Power of Attorney is a big deal.

 The National Association for the Deaf declined to comment to the Earmold, but two independent sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirm that a countersuit is being prepared.
